Playing the game

You are Guybrush Threepwood, Mighty Pirate. To move around use the W-A-S-D keys or hold down the left mouse button while dragging the mouse. If you don’t want to waste time looking around at the scenery, hold the Shift key or the right mouse button while walking to start running.

Clicking on objects or people will allow you to interact with them by starting a conversation or picking them up (respectively, as Guybrush isn’t charming enough to pick up anything but objects). Items collected go into your inventory which is accessed by mousing over to the right hand side of the screen, the Tab or I keys, or the middle button on your mouse.

Sum it up
Maybe I expected too much, and I blame TellTale for setting me up with the previous episodes, but I was actually a little disappointed in the grand finale to this latest book of the Monkey Island series. The script and story were pretty good and the characters you care about are wrapped up in a mostly satisfying way, but the delivery left me wanting, I don’t know, a game. There were a lot of cutscenes which, to a certain extent, I understand their use as a tool to wrap up the plot. But the quantity of them made this episode feel more like an animated movie than a game. Then there’s the certain item retrieval task that requires the use of two items multiple times which feels like the dev was just running out of ideas at this point. And, finally, the final battle between Guybrush and LeChuck was frustratingly tedious if you didn’t figure it out the first three times around the loop.

But, maybe my disappointment has more to do with my impatience with lots of dialogue in an adventure game than it does with this particular episode. Either way, I’m glad to finally be introduced to the world of the Monkey Island series and am looking forward to the next installment, whenever that may be.
