Verdict: Avast! (sea of fun)

In a Nutshell: Lair of the Leviathan is the third chapter in the Tales of Monkey Island adventure game series.

(from the game’s website)

“Trapped in the belly of the beast, our hero encounters a surprising band of castaways, including the long-lost (and obsessive-compulsive) explorer Coronado De Cava. Can the Mighty Pirate win the suspicious De Cava’s trust? Will sexy pirate hunter Morgan LeFlay prove to be a ruthless enemy, or an unlikely ally? Will the group find La Esponja Grande in time to save Elaine from the rampant Pox of LeChuck? And will the world be crushed by the gnashing teeth of a certain demonic skull? Tales of Monkey Island’s moist and absorbing third episode, Lair of the Leviathan, will answer some of these urgent questions — and raise still more — as the five month adventure builds to its epic climax!”

Playing the game
You are Guybrush Threepwood, Mighty Pirate. To move around use the W-A-S-D keys or hold down the left mouse button while dragging the mouse. If you don’t want to waste time looking around at the scenery, hold the Shift key or the right mouse button while walking to start running.

Clicking on objects or people will allow you to interact with them by starting a conversation or picking them up (respectively, as Guybrush isn’t charming enough to pick up anything but objects). Items collected go into your inventory which is accessed by mousing over to the right hand side of the screen, the Tab or I keys, or the middle button on your mouse.

Sum it up
Episode three brings the fun level back up as the story, script and the new characters (and apparently one very old character) you meet are all really entertaining. The challenges and interactions were well thought out and fit nicely into the storyline. Unlike the first two episodes, the geography is greatly reduced in this one giving you more to do and taking less time to get from place to place (concentrated fun?).

There are a couple of very subtle interactions, for lack of a better word, to figure out which really keeps you on your observational toes. Maybe I was just getting lazy while playing this one though.

Overall, this episode is really the high point for the series thus far. Onward to episode 4!
