Playing the game
You’ll start the game by creating a character. First, give your character a name then, using the available options, pick a gender, adjust facial features, change the clothes, etc.
Next you’ll move to the ship deck to pick a machine to play or to go to the prize vault. You can also use the skull hanging in the top left of the interface to quickly go between games instead of always coming back here. Once at the machine, pick the denomination and amount of money you want to put into the machine. These are changed into credits and betting is done by number of credits per line.
What the game gets right
For the most part, there’s a nice variety of slot themes going on here. Some of the bonus games are interesting and, while a lot are just guesswork, there’s one or two that take some strategy. The graphics and music for a large portion of them were done well enough to keep me pushing the button and feeding money into the machine. The lobby, while a little hard to navigate, was fun to look at and did its best to keep the pirate theme going.
What the game gets wrong
For a piratey themed game (or just a theme for an offshore casino), there aren’t many piratey machines to be played and only one that specifically has a Blackbeard character. So I guess my first issue is that it feels like false advertising. Next, while most of the non-pirate themed slots are decent enough, some of the slot games seem like they’re just filler. If you have a game with twenty-five slot machines and five or so of them aren’t any fun, you’ve really only got a game with twenty slot machines.
Sum it up
Since these games are all based on statistics and probability, you’ll obviously want to push the button as many times as possible. This is actually far too easy to do and I found hours going by with the “just one more click” thought running through my mind.
Even with what the game gets right, this is still just thematic variations on a very old design. Where’s the fresh look at slots? Instead of columns of symbols, why not rows or some combintation of rows and columns? Or, what about concentric circles? That could have an astrological theme and be called “Age of Aquarius” where the stars must align to get lots of cash. There’s probably a good reason that slots are still slots, though. And even though slots, and casino games in general, aren’t really my cuppa, after playing this I think I finally understand the appeal.
