Playing the game
You’ll start the game by creating a character by first picking a name. Then, using the available options, pick a gender, adjust facial features, change the clothes, etc.
Then you’re off to the floor of the casino. While each game is fairly intuitive to pick up after a few rounds, a guide is available to get you spending your money quickly. There are dozens of options of card games, table games, slots and the extras (like Keno).
To get started at a table games, you’ll pick the amount you want to ante and then need to left click on the ante circle. Clicking again will add the same amout to the ante. To clear it out, right click on your chips before you press the “Deal” button. For slots, you’ll need to pick the denomination of the slot machine (options range from $0.01 up to $100) and then how much money you want to put into the machine.
Once you’ve played certain games enough, you’ll have the option to enter a trial game which is just you versus the dealer. Trial modes come with a game specific goal (for three card poker it was to play until you get three of a kind). Once you’ve successfully completed the trial mode, you can enter the tournament for that game.
What the game gets right
The best aspect about this game, to me, was learning how to play the games found at the casino to up your chances of having fun playing them in real life (and possibly winning money). The help files, one is in-game the other is a .pdf, give some nice background and helpful “strategy” for playing the various games.
Much like a real casino, the games are easy to pick up and the are fun to look at. The flashy colors and lights make you keep pushing the button on the slot machine or throwing another brightly colored chip in just to keep being mesmerized.
What the game gets wrong
The floating menu bar leaves a cluttered feeling to an already visually loud interface (it is a casino theme, after all). But, since there are so many games to play and the selection screen fills up the background, why not just a button on the interface to bring up a menu screen?
As a released title, there seem to be too many patches and too many bugs (apparently my callous to this common occurrence is limited to operating systems). And, to get the first patch to run required having the game already running (was a lucky guess as it’s not mentioned on the site) and then required more patches once that one had been installed. One of the most irritating bugs was with trials. When you enter a trial, your money is set to the amount when the trial became available. This is good when you lose money before entering the trial, not so good when you’ve won money before then.
There’s really not much point to the character builder as you usually only see your character from the chest up. And then your character is usually slapping it’s forehead or throwing the big loser sign at you; not very encouraging.
Sum it up
Casino games just aren’t my, ahem, “deal” (yuk yuk). I kept hitting a point during play where my brain went on coast and I stopped playing and was just pushing a button regardless of outcome. (No wonder casinos make so much money.) Why not have a story with casino games as minigames, perhaps as ways to have the funds to upgrade your horse or your six-shooter?
There’s a lot of play time available in this title and I didn’t get a chance to try every single game. If you like casino games, hate the smoking at real casinos, and generally have more fun when you’re not losing real money, give this a shot and let me know what you think.
