Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People – E4

SBCG4APE4 Title

Verdict: cool, cool glasses

In a Nutshell: Dangeresque 3: The criminal Projective is the latest episode in the Strong Bad adventure game series.

(from the game’s website)

“You play Dangeresque, a dirty cop in pursuit of glory, justice (sort of) and big sacks of cash. When a simple job to recover a long-lost formula goes wrong, Dangeresque must save the world from the diabolical plans of an unhinged madman. Can he stay alive long enough to complete his action-packed epic? Looks like he’s gonna have to jump . . .”

Playing the game

In Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People, a point-and-click adventure, the player assumes the roll of Strong Bad. Clicking on the environment will move Strong Bad around. Some objects have labels that will appear when the pointer is shining on them. Clicking those objects allows Strong Bad to interact with them or will give you more information about the object.

During your adventure, you’ll also be interacting with the crazy cast of characters. Clicking on these characters starts a conversation. Depending on the conversation, you’ll have the option of clicking on the icon of the topic you want to discuss or praising or taunting the character. On the PC, right-clicking will skip ahead in the conversation.

Strong Bad will occasionally collect items. These can be accessed in the inventory. Some items, like the metal detector, are in use as soon as they are selected. Other items require you to first select them and then select the object in the environment you want to use the item with.

Visiting the other areas of the world of Strong Bad is made possible with the map. Open the map and pick where you want to go, assuming you have it drawn in. Opening the map brings up a flip through menu that includes a couple of notebook pages keeping track of your score and item collection progress.

What the game gets right

Again with the witty and clever script! This latest episode doesn’t lack for laughs and giggles and the story line will have you fondly remembering shows like those that inspired the creators: James Bond, TJ Hooker, and Miami Vice, to name a few. (That’s right, “fondly.”)

Episode 4 makes really good use of the “Extended Play” feature, found in all of the episodes, by keeping up the cinematic motif of DVD special features. Interviews, bloopers, and behind the scenes elements keep the humorous script rolling after you’ve finished the main storyline of the episode.

What the game gets wrong

The only thing I can thing of that would have been nice to see is some sort of “Previously on Dangeresque” montage. Dangeresque 3: The Criminal Projective stands just fine on its own. (But here are the links to Dangeresque 1 and Dangeresque 2 for your enjoyment)

Sum it up

Dangeresque 3: The Criminal Projective, and the Dangeresque series in general, is a wonderful comedic take on the detective/cop shows I grew up watching: (more big sunglasses links!) CHIPS, Hill St. Blues, Magnum PI, Dirty Harry, and the lot. I gotta wonder, though, if some of the humor is lost on the younger crowd.

By now I’d have to think that the full season would be worth the investment, especially (and maybe most importantly) if you are a fan of the Strong Bad and Homestarrunner cast of characters. Looking forward to the next episode to see what they do with this image:
