Playing the game
You are one Mr. Bad, Strong, email checker extraordinaire. Using the mouse, or Wii remote, click on different locations to move yourself around, pick up or use items, and navigate the map and inventory. While engaging in conversations, click on the desired talk bubble to get more information, give a compliment or “double deuce” provoking, witty slam.
What the game gets right
The script for the latest installment of Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People: Baddest of the Bands has definitely got a lot of cleverness and wit to it. From making fun of itself (“surely there has to be a more convoluted way . . .”-sb) to solving some of the puzzles, Baddest of the Bands will keep you grinning.
As I was never a big fan of it, I’m glad to see that there’s no Teen Girl Squad mini game but still a really great Teen Girl Squad comic. And speaking of mini games, Videletrix keeps the classics rolling with the new fun machine mini-game “Limozeen: Hot Babelian Odyssey”.
What the game gets wrong
As in the first episode, albeit to a much lesser extent, there’s still a bit of slogging through the “convoluted” adventure story as you “try to figure out why on EARTH ye can’t get ye” . . . whatever it is you’re trying to get at the time.
Sum it up
My favorite moment in Baddest of the Bands was figuring out one of the puzzles and grinning about the outcome BEFORE I clicked through the solution. The outcome was even funnier than I had pictured (which either says a lot about the game or very little about my imagination.)
Episode 3 is definitely better than the first episode but comes in a little shy of the second episode. Some of the conversations still feel a bit long and I found my self clicking through them the first time around, thus missing some hints as to what to do next.
Still, with the way Baddest of the Bands turned out, looks like buying the full season is a good idea. Give the Baddest of the Bands demo a try and let me know what you think of it.
