Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People – E2

SBCGAPE2 Title

Verdict: Huzzah!

In a Nutshell: Use the might of the mouse, or the wavy power of the Wii-mote, as you struggle alongside Strong Bad against the over-reaching, over-weighty authority of the Municipality.

(from the game’s website)

“When Strong Bad fails to obey the King of Town’s totally unfair email tax, he’s placed under house arrest. Once freed from his wrongful imprisonment, Strong Bad goes on a mission to unite the local warring factions under the Strong Badian flag. Is Free Country USA ready for such an awesome ruler?”

Playing the game

You are one Mr. Bad, Strong, email checker extraordinaire. Using the mouse, or Wii remote, click on different locations to move yourself around, pick up or use items, and navigate the map and inventory. While engaging in conversations, click on the desired talk bubble to get more information, give a compliment or “double deuce” provoking, witty slam.

What the game gets right

The plot . . .there is one! Sure it’s your classic hero’s journey, but that’s what I know and love. Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People Episode 2: Strongbadia the Free comes out swinging with an epic quest against the Man to rival the epic quest against the dragon man.

The new mini-games are fantastic. Maps and Minions as a 3d board game with the characters from the episode was so well done that it makes me wish it were longer and that I could actually go out and purchase a boxed version. Math Kickers was hillarious platform fighting goodness. (Any chance we can get our Math Kickers fix as a Videlectrix flash game over at the Homstarrunner site?)

Using the Maps and Minions game board as this episode’s game map was ingenious. The board-as-map added a key element of immersion that kept me in the strategery/we’re-at-war mindset through the entire game.

What the game gets wrong

I want to say that the cut scenes feel a little long, but they’re so much fun to watch and so well written that it’s hard to count the length against them.

Sum it up

I’m still not a big fan of the Teen Girl Squad mini-game but, maybe that’s because I’m not very good at figuring out how to make funny Teen Girl Squad comics. And, just like playing Episode 1, I still feel bad when I do mean things to Strong Sad.

All that aside, Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People: Episode 2 was as good as I had hoped it would be. All of my favorite characters are out in full force and Strong Mad was especially hillarious. Can’t wait to see what the Brothers Strong get up to in the next episode!
