Schizoid (Demo)

Schizoid Title

Verdict: Arcade-tastic!

In a Nutshell: Schiziod is a “gobble-em-up” classic and needs to be in a stand up machine in your local arcade or convenience store where you and your friend can vie for top co-op place with Slushies at your side.

(from the game’s website)

“Schizoid, the most co-op game ever, is an action game for 1 or 2 players, who must cooperate to protect each other from barrages of glowing enemies.”

Playing the game
Use one analog stick on your controller to move around and destroy enemies that are the same color as your ship while avoiding all other colors in normal mode. Use both analog sticks to control both crafts in uber mode (so insanely hard!)

What the game gets right

Schizoid starts off right with its simple, classic game play reminiscent of of Pac-Man (but no pellets and all ghosts) and a three-leged race (if you want to get anywhere you MUST work with your teammate).

The game keeps things interesting with three modes of play. Single-player with AI is a lot like a tutorial of how to play as the best idea is to follow the AI and back it up. Single-player uber mode is insanely difficult and makes your brain hurt (but is fun because of that rather than just being frustrating . . .or, maybe I just like crazy stuff). Two player co-op is where Schizoid shines the brightest, especially if both players are in the same room, as hoots and hollers ring out.

What the game gets wrong

Nothing to really note here. Move along.

Sum it up

Did I mention that Uberschizoid mode is hard? Despite the level of insanity, uber mode is definitely a “must try” just to feel the two halves of your brain trying to work together.

Schizoid is a game that I can see making a great tournament game; pitting your two-player team against others and crazy uberschizoiders against each other.

All in all, I highly reccommend picking up the demo off of XBLA. If you like the classic arcade games, it’s highly likely you’re going to get a kick out of Schizoid.
