Playing the game
Use the buttons to trigger the corresponding firework when it crosses the accuracy bar in rhythm with the music.
What the game gets right
Boom Boom Rocket is simple and pretty with a lot of nice touches. For example, the invisible audience will applaud more and the explosions are more spectacular the more accurate you are. Also, the flying camera adds a nice variation on the difficulty to emphasize the need to match the rhythm and not rely too heavily on visual cues.
The variation in difficulty and modes keeps Boom Boom Rocket from getting stale. I’m delighted that Bizarre Creations included an option to allow the highest rocket to explode as it is meant for younger kids to enjoy the pretty fireworks. Another mode of play to note was endurance mode; the hilarity of trying to keep up is proportional to the increase of RPMs of a song.
What the game gets wrong
In competition mode, Player 2’s fireworks are more difficult to distinguish from the explosions when there’s a lot going on visually. Now, if you’re Player 1, just tell them they can’t handle it. If you’re Player 2, demand to switch sides and see who’s laughing then.
There are times, especially at the opening of songs, where there is no rhythm to try to match up with. This seems a little odd for a rhythm game. And speaking of songs, it’s unfortunate that there’s such a limited number of songs to pick from. Bizzare Creations and (the developer) of Audiosurf should get together and make song selections from personal collections available for Boom Boom Rocket.
Sum it up
All in all, I had a great time with Boom Boom Rocket especially since my wife enjoyed the game, too. Definitely one I will have to keep in mind for a quick game fix.
