Vector TD, TD 2, and TDx

Welcome to Casual Fridays where we’ll discuss a casual game . . . on Friday.

In a Nutshell: These are single-player tower defense games with bright colors and a repetitive soundtrack.

(from the game’s website)

“The aim of the game is to eliminate the Vectoid threat before they reach the end of the path. You do this by constructing towers along the path to attack oncoming Vectoids. Success is not based solely on the types of tower you select, but where you place them and what upgrade and bonus options you take.”

What the game gets right

The graphics and basic premise of the game are incredibly simple allowing a player to jump right in. In fact, this game appears SO easy to play that it lures you into it’s gaping maw only to spit you out when you realize you need to go use the bathroom.

Being able to place towers as soon as you have the money for them was a nice surprise.

What the game gets wrong

The music is ok for about 2 minutes. They could easily use this game for subliminal messaging if they wanted to. And you know who I mean by “they” (it’s the same people that are looking at you through the window right now).

Half way through (level 25 of 50 on the first map) the game becomes insanely difficult. Maybe I’m just not that great at strategy games or maybe you need to have the discipline of Steve Wiebe to play this game to its end. So, either the game cranks the difficulty too high too soon, or there are simply too many levels. After an embarrassingly high number of attempts, I only made it to level 29 on the TDx version and walked away without any feeling of accomplishment.

Sum it up

This game is probably not a good idea for addictive personalities. It’s one of those things that you sit down to play “just one” and eventually realize that you’ve been sitting there for several hours. However, it is fun for those that like strategery and definitely a solid game that’s easy to play but hard to master.
