What the game gets right
Simply put, this game is shockingly easy to start playing and only goes up from there in terms of how much fun it is to play.
Direction and weapons are controlled with the mouse and speed and cameras are on the keyboard which just seems to make sense. (Other available control options are joystick, gamepad, or Xbox controller) The point and shoot is a relief after trying out games like Ace Combat that have a billion little blips all over the screen that mean something important, surely, but completely detract from playing.
The music is decent, the graphics and effects are really well done, and the flying is smooth.
What the game gets wrong
The graphic novel inspired storyline that comes with the game, in a word, shouldn’t. In two words, “It’s awful”. Thankfully you can escape out of the “story” and get on with the game. Why not give me more historical information or maybe even some old footage of fighter planes from the time period?
Menu layouts are a little cumbersome and get a little annoying; switching between center of the screen to across the bottom.
The only other annoying thing I can come up with is the in-flight “help” from the ground controller. He.Does.Not.Shut.Up. until you do all the things you are supposed to be learning. For example “Hold the right mouse button to switch to torpedo camera.” “Try it now.” “No really, try it.”* “Have you tried it yet?”* “Don’t you care?”* “If you don’t try it I’m gonna cry!”* And once you do try it (to finally shut him up) what’s the other pay off? “That’s it. You get a better view of the action.” (Note to self: attack control tower next time) *-these are obviously made up simply to convey the grating of nerves one will have to sustain for an otherwise terrific game.
Sum it up
This game is action from the moment you get past the menu screens. The demo has you in dogfights and doing bombing/torpedo runs once your wheels are off the ground. Each level starts off with a brief historical overview and plane selection (with some period variation on colors). After the story and some loading time you are on the runway with the audio from the control tower letting you know what the current task is.
I did have some problems with the controls locking up but am guessing it’s either just the demo version or that I was using a trackball.
I know there are quite a few negatives for this game but the amount of fun to be had completely overshadows where the developer could have done better. I’ve played through the demo a few times trying to squeeze out every last ounce of fun and I am failing.
This game will be worth my money once I buy the full version. I really wish I could find this game in an arcade as it brought back memories of playing After Burner in the cockpit arcade machines. Only, this game is waaaay better. You should definitely go get the demo and give this game a try
