What the game gets right

I don’t remember Sherlock Holmes being a pompous ass but, if he was, this game nailed it.

Best quote from the demo: “This appears to contain some measure of opium. I shall analyze it back at Baker Street.” Oh.Yeah. Party tonight!

What the game gets wrong

Starting the game you are presented with a non-standard mode of control which is a bad idea, at the least. WASD works, but they don’t tell you that to start with.

Next comes the lack of game. If we were to rewrite the game blurb honestly, it would go something like “Point and click your way along a mundane viewing of a 3d world to see some cut scenes! Watch Sherlock Holmes amaze everyone while simultaneously pissing them all off.”

Then there’s the journal. First, you get the icon that tells you “here’s something to look at” so you do and Holmes quips something like “What a peculiar drawing”. Next, cue journal icon and noise which occur every time you get a clue. Then, you think “Why the hell do I want to record ‘What a peculiar drawing’?” so you look at your journal and that little phrase has mutated into a paragraph of observations we don’t really care about. (Amazingly the opium that was found is “conveniently” left out of the journal)

Sum it up

This isn’t a game; this is the poor love child of a made-for-tv movie and a book that someone-gave-you-as-a-present-but-is-not-your-style. This is like going to see a movie, but in order to watch the movie, occasionally you have to get up and find a specific new chair, but it won’t be hard to find, because someone will be there to put their hand up when you look at them. But that’s not all. Once you get to your seat the person that was there will give you an addendum to the script because the actors aren’t going to be telling you these things.

But, hey, what do I know? Grab the demo and let me know if you agree or disagree.
