“The player again picks up the crowbar of research scientist Gordon Freeman, who finds himself on an alien-infested Earth being picked to the bone, its resources depleted, its populace dwindling. Freeman is thrust into the unenviable role of rescuing the world from the wrong he unleashed back at Black Mesa. And a lot of people he cares about are counting on him.”

What the game gets right

The story was terrific and the villains were done so well that I was looking for my crowbar within the first minute of the game. Ravenholm was sufficiently creepy without getting campy (just barely, though). Certain situations require some stealth and strategy; not being able to rush everything is a big plus to me.

I still love the fact that the protagonist is a geeky scientist.

The men-to-women AI ratio seems about even in this game and the main female NPC protagonist is tougher and smarter than Mr. Freeman.

What the game gets wrong

The vehicle levels – where you are commanding a fan boat or a dune buggy – while highly entertaining, were a bit on the long side dragging the game down a little. In addition, the gameplay was linear and there were no detriments for taking your sweet time to get somewhere.

Sum it up

Being able to carry around so many weapons doesn’t make sense anymore, but this game was before the limited weapon idea became popular so I’ll let it slide. Speaking of limited weapons, is it just me or do Half-Life and Halo borrow heavily from each other?

Obviously I have recently come into ownership of the Orange Box and am really looking forward to the included next two installments of the story line.

I am now playing this game and it is amazing. I am totally entranced by it. I am not done yet and have about 20 hours into it. I am about half way.

Going to PAX got me interested in gaming again after many years. A buddy of mine suggested this game. I am well on my way to returning to the gaming world.

    Thanks

Great to hear it! Are you going to be playing through the entire Orange Box or just this game?

  3. Spiritbear Says:

I only bought this game but I think I will buy the rest and go through the entire Orange Box. I probably should have bought the whole thing initially.
